Description

This Tennessee Onion Casserole is a Southern comfort classic featuring tender sweet onions layered with creamy cheese and topped with a golden, buttery cracker crust. It’s simple to make, incredibly flavorful, and perfect for potlucks, holidays, or as a hearty side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 large sweet onions (Vidalia recommended), thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ¼ tsp paprika
  • ½ cup crushed Ritz crackers or breadcrumbs

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions for 5–7 minutes until soft and translucent.
  • Spread onions evenly in the casserole dish.
  • Pour cream over onions, then season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  • Layer cheeses on top, covering onions completely.
  • Sprinkle crushed crackers for a crunchy topping.
  • Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Vidalia onions are the best choice, but other sweet onions work well.
  • Shred cheese from a block for smoother melting.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to help it set.
  • For a lighter version, swap heavy cream for milk and use whole wheat breadcrumbs.
  • Freeze leftovers in portions for up to 2 months.
