Description

Cake Layers:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brewed espresso or 2 tsp instant coffee in hot water
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Caramel Sauce:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp brewed espresso
  • ¼ cup caramel sauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Toppings:

  • Chocolate shavings
  • Chopped nuts
  • Edible flowers
  • Extra caramel drizzle

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line cake pans.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt).
  3. Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, stir in coffee.
  5. Divide batter among pans, bake 25–30 min until toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. Make caramel sauce: melt sugar over medium heat, add butter, then cream, stir until smooth. Cool slightly.
  7. Prepare buttercream: beat butter, add powdered sugar gradually, mix in espresso, caramel, and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Assemble cake: layer cake with buttercream between, frost outside, drizzle caramel, and decorate with toppings. Chill briefly before slicing.
