Cake Layers:

- 1 cup brewed espresso or 2 tsp instant coffee in hot water
- 1 cup buttermilk
Caramel Sauce:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter
- ½ cup heavy cream
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Buttercream Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp brewed espresso
- ¼ cup caramel sauce
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Toppings:
- Chocolate shavings
- Chopped nuts
- Edible flowers
- Extra caramel drizzle
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line cake pans.
- Whisk dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt).
- Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, stir in coffee.
- Divide batter among pans, bake 25–30 min until toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- Make caramel sauce: melt sugar over medium heat, add butter, then cream, stir until smooth. Cool slightly.
- Prepare buttercream: beat butter, add powdered sugar gradually, mix in espresso, caramel, and vanilla until smooth.
- Assemble cake: layer cake with buttercream between, frost outside, drizzle caramel, and decorate with toppings. Chill briefly before slicing.
