Ingredients
Scale
- 2 sheets puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 4–5 medium apples, peeled and sliced
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup white sugar
- 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 egg (for egg wash, whisked with 1 tbsp milk)
- Optional: caramel drizzle, chopped nuts, powdered sugar
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: In a bowl, toss apple slices with sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Prepare the pastry: Roll out one puff pastry sheet and place it in a greased baking dish. Smooth out gently without stretching.
- Add filling: Spread the apple mixture evenly over the base pastry. Dot with butter cubes.
- Cover with pastry: Lay the second puff pastry sheet on top, pressing edges to seal. Cut small slits for steam vents.
- Egg wash: Brush the top with the egg-milk mixture for a golden crust.
- Bake: Place in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Rest & serve: Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or custard.
Notes
- Best apples to use: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji.
- Keep puff pastry chilled before working with it.
- Avoid overfilling the braid to prevent leaks.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg or drizzle caramel before baking.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container; reheat in the oven for crispiness.
